Poetry Contest Judging

Hello, again!

Many of you know that I’m a member of Writing.Com (if you didn’t, then you do now! *laugh*) and that I spend a lot of time there. I recently bought my new membership to last me well into next year so I feel good about that. And I entered a contest for the first time in ages. I am eagerly awaiting the judging on it actually, as the results haven’t been posted yet. But what I am taking part in most of the time right now is the judging for a poetry contest that me and a friend put together.

Each day for seven days there was a different photo prompt and form that you needed to write in. We are reviewing the entries now. (Reviewing on Writing.Com consists of actually sending a rating and critique.) I have many entries to go through as each day had over ten entries. Many people completed all seven days of the contest! I need to get this done soon as the contest ended some time ago and people are getting antsy for their prizes. I think I shall set up a reward system for myself for getting this done. For each day’s worth of entries I review, I shall offer myself up a new book on my Kindle (and not a freebie or a 99 cent book either!) How does that sound?

In my non-writing life, things have been rather hectic, as my husband and I are dealing with the death of one of our dogs, Sparky, and we are both dealing with highly stressful classes as we near the end of our Bachelor’s degrees. I love my new class though (Intermediate Fiction Writing Workshop started last Monday). But hubby has to write a 40-page paper! I do not envy him at all!

New Month, Wrapping Things Up

Hello, everyone!

I hope everyone had a wonderful end to January and is getting geared up for the wonderful holiday that is Valentine’s Day! I love February for a few reasons: 1) because it’s quirky and likes to get away with only having 28 days, 2) because of Valentine’s Day! and 3) because it has several fun days to celebrate you probably didn’t even know existed. The 4th is “Thank a Mailman Day,” the 16th is “Do a Grouch a Favor Day,” and the 20th is “Love Your Pet Day.” That’s just the beginning! Check out all of the exciting February holidays HERE.

The new month brings with it the last half of my class on American Lit. We are reading a new book now (we finished “To Kill a Mockingbird” and I got a 97% on my paper for it – GO ME!). This new book is called Rule of the Bone: A Novel. I’m 5 chapters in and so far it has my attention. I’m interested to see where the discussion board questions and the final paper topic lead me. I’m also reading The Great Gatsby for my final project which is an 8-10 page paper of the loss of innocence in Gatsby and Daisy stemming from their rocky romance. I have read the book once, and I am re-reading it with an eye for new details.

As far as non-academic writing, I am still working on character profiles for the as-yet-untitled piece. I love writing the character profiles and learning about them as they develop with each question I answer and each paragraph I write. I have the most fun writing up the scene sketches, which is coming up next. I can’t wait!

I love that I have been feeling motivated to do things lately. The Bipolar sometimes saps the energy out of me and leaves no motivation for the things I have to do, let alone the things I want to do. But lately it’s been great. My sleep has been on a regular schedule and I haven’t been spending all day in bed, which is definitely an improvement over a few months ago.

My goals for this month are as follows:

  • Finish up my Lit class with at least a B+
  • Post links to some of my favorite poems onto my Personal Poetry blog page with descriptions
  • Have prep writing done so I can start outlining draft of novel by start of next month

I think that sounds about right, don’t you? 🙂

Something I’m Proud of: Getting that 97% on my “To Kill a Mockingbird” paper

Three Things I’m Grateful For:

  • Being in my final year of school and only having to go part-time
  • Having a husband who supports me in school AND in my writing endeavors
  • My friend Brooke who helps keep me sane
